From The Ground Up

There’s a strange little moment that happens somewhere between dreaming about something and actually doing it.

For months, so much of this has lived in our heads.

Ideas scribbled down. Plans changed ten times. Late-night conversations. Measuring spaces. Looking at pictures. Talking about chickens, flowers, coops, gardens, and all the things we could do with this little piece of land God gave us.

And sometimes, if I’m being truthful, I’ve wondered if I was dreaming too big.

But this week, we put up our first greenhouse coop.

And standing back and looking at it, I had one of those moments where I thought…

Wow. We’re actually doing this.

It isn’t just an idea anymore.

There’s something standing on our property today that wasn’t there a week ago because my husband and I decided to build it.

And Lord knows it wasn’t glamorous. 😂

There was heat, rain, frustration, figuring things out as we went, stopping to stare at pieces that absolutely did not seem like they belonged anywhere, and probably a few moments when both of us wondered why we had gotten ourselves into this.

But we finished it.

Together.

And I think that might be my favorite part of all of this.

We aren’t starting with a big farm that someone handed down to us. We didn’t buy a property where everything was already built and waiting. There aren't generations of barns, coops, gardens, or equipment here for us to step into.

We are starting at the beginning.

Just me, my husband, our girls, our little piece of land, and a whole lot of ideas.

We’re learning as we go.

We’re building things with our own hands.

We’re making mistakes and changing plans.

We’re figuring out what works for our family and what doesn't.

And slowly, one project at a time, we're creating something that didn't exist before us.

I think one day I’m going to miss this part.

Maybe years from now there will be several coops sitting out there. Maybe the flower garden will be full. Maybe there will be chicks hatching, bouquets being wrapped, customers pulling into the driveway, and all the things that feel so far away right now will just be part of everyday life.

And I hope when that day comes, we remember this.

The first greenhouse.

The first time we stood back and realized that something we had talked about for months was finally sitting right in front of us.

The beginning.

Because lately, this dream has started feeling a little less like a dream.

It’s becoming our life.

And there is something incredibly special about knowing that we're building it from the ground up, side by side, with our girls watching and growing right alongside it.

I guess that's what building a homestead really is.

Not having everything figured out.

Not having everything finished.

Just looking at what God has placed in your hands and saying,

“Okay. Let’s see what we can build with it.”

And then getting to work.
