Slow Progress Is Still Progress

Things have been moving a little slower around the homestead than I imagined they would.

Plans have changed. Then changed again. We’ve reconsidered options, measured things twice, moved things around in our heads a hundred times, and realized that some of the ideas that sounded perfect at first might not actually be the best fit for us.

And I’m learning that maybe that’s part of building something from the ground up.

The hardest part lately hasn’t been a lack of excitement or willingness to work. It’s simply time.

My husband and I are pretty much the only two sets of hands behind all of these projects. Between work, kids, the house, animals, school starting back, and everything else that fills our days, our schedules seem to constantly oppose each other. When I’m home, he’s working. When he’s home, I’m working. And on the rare occasion we’re both home, there are about 47 things staring at us waiting to be done.

Sometimes I look around and think, We should be further along by now.

But then I have to remind myself—we aren't racing anyone.

This is our home. Our little homestead. Our dream.

And dreams built by two tired people in the hours they can find between real life probably aren't going to come together overnight.

There will be changes of plans. There will be things we thought we wanted that we decide against. There will be projects that sit half-finished longer than I'd like. There will probably be plenty more evenings spent standing outside saying, “Okay… what if we did it THIS way instead?” 😂

But there will also be progress.

Maybe not always the big, exciting, picture-worthy kind. Sometimes progress is simply figuring out what not to do. Sometimes it's saving money instead of rushing. Sometimes it's staking out a spot, changing your mind, researching another option, or waiting until you actually have the time to do something right.

So for now, I'm choosing to look up at the sun instead of down at everything that isn't finished yet.

Because when I look around, I can still see what we're building.

Not just coops, gardens, brooders, or a little business.

We're building something together.

Slowly. Imperfectly. In between shifts and responsibilities and raising a family.

And somehow, little by little, we're going to get there.

We know what we want. We're willing to work for it. And even on the weeks when it feels like we've barely moved at all, we're still moving forward.

We got this. 🤍

Yall’s truly,

Fowler family
